Composite Restorations

Composite restorations are tooth-colored fillings. They are made of a hybrid resin that is then bonded to the tooth. Continuously, composites are being significantly improved. In fact, composites are not only used for restoring decay, but are also used for cosmetic improvements.

How is a composite inserted?
Following preparation, the dentist places the composite in layers, using a light specialized to harden each layer. The dentist then further shapes the composite to fit the tooth, and polishes the composite for smoothness and to help prevent staining. Using knowledge of dental anatomy, the dentist provides the patient's tooth with the most natural look possible.

Advantages of Composite Restorations

Esthetics are the main advantage to composite. Some resins used in tooth-colored restorations contain fluoride which can help prevent decay.

What is the lifespan of a composite?
Studies show that composites last on average 7-10 years. Patients must remember to visit their dentist regularly so that plaque does not interfere with the composites' strength and functionality.
